KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 — Some 75 SMS services were suspended last year for distributing immoral materials including lewd video while one case was prosecuted in court, Dewan Rakyat heard today.
“The services used 42 short codes by 15 SMS providers. Some 66 cases were investigated in 2009,” Deputy Minister of Information Communication and Culture Senator Heng Seai Kie said.
She was replying to a supplementary question by Mohd Firdaus Jaafar (PAS-Jerai) who asked about measures taken by the ministry to stem distribution of lewd video via handphones.
Heng said distributing and receiving lewd video is an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 (Act 588).
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had also established a complaints bureau to receive public complaints including lewd video.
“The Communication Media Content Forum (CMCF) has been established under Section 212 of Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 to regulate content distributed by the electronic media.
Nancy Shukri (BN-Batang Sadong) asked whether individuals who receive lewd video could forward them to MCMC together with the senders’ phone number.
“All SMS messages can be forwarded to MCMC which will immediately act on them,” Heng said. — Bernama
